Raymond E. DeWalt, who came up with the idea for the radial arm saw, started the company in 1923. It grew quickly, and in 1947, it was restructured and changed its name to DeWalt Inc. In 1949, the company was bought by American Machine & Foundry Co., Inc., and in 1960, it was sold to Black & Decker.
Commercial contractors now use a lot of tools from the DeWalt brand -including hand tools for contractors, like utility knives, pliers, adjustable wrenches, tape measures, saws, and hammers. In 2013, wrenches, ratchets, and sockets, which are used by mechanics, were added.
