There is a reason why lumber jacks are often portrayed as the epitome of masculinity: it really takes a lot of strength and it is quite a challenging workout to turn big trunks into manageable pieces. However, unless you do not have a better workout routine, there really is no reason why you should put yourself through the painful effort of splitting wood by hand. There are more than a dozen electric log splitters on the market that push logs with the help of a ram against a stable splitter so all the work you have to do is to set the wood in place. The best thing is that, because of the enormous pressures that are involved, especially if you are using a high quality log splitter, the logs go through even if they were not cut at a perfect 90 degree angle. Of course a lot hangs on the power of the splitter, and usually the price goes up with the tons of pressure the motor can generate. However, you may not need the strongest machine if you are using softer wood or thinner logs. So when we chose the best electric log splitter we also looked at the price factor and decided that there was not just one choice that would fit every need and we gave you 5. Besides the following list itself we have also prepared a deep analysis for each electric log splitter so make sure to scroll down past the list to find the reviews and make an informed decision about which splitter is best for you.

1. Boss Industrial ES7T20 Electric Log Splitter
Rated at 7 tones of pressure the Boss Industrial ES7T20 Electric Log Splitter is one of the strongest machines on the market and yet it comes at a more than reasonable price. If you are not sure about what type of wood you are going to be splitting a year or 2 from now, this would be your best choice because it is not that much more expensive than even the 2 tone splitter we are going to look at next, but it is so much more powerful. It can split logs of up to 10 inches in thickness but we have actually managed to go through logs that were 12 inches thick. Of course if the logs have a lot of knots in them, you may run into some problems, but because the ram withdraws automatically, there should not be that big of a problem to reposition the log so that it will split easily. The other great thing about the Boss Industrial ES7T20 is the fact that it has a one hand operation system, whereas most log splitters require you to use both hands when operating them.
2. WEN 56206 6-Ton Electric Log Splitter
If you are working on a very tight budget but would still like the benefits of owning a really powerful electric log splitter, a good alternative is the WEN 56206 6-Ton Electric Log Splitter. It is only rated at 6 tones of pressure, but we really could not find a log that the Boss Industrial would split while the WEN would not. However, that is not to say there is no difference in power and there was a visible difference in how much the WEN struggled to go through the same type of log that the Boss Industrial handled with ease. The biggest difference, though, is in the fact that the WEN was specifically designed to be operated with both hands. The reason is that most manufacturers hope to force this way their customers to keep hands away from the log in the splitting process. On the other hand we feel that people who need to control stubborn logs will find a way to use a foot or an extra pedal so that they may get to also hold the log, and it is in this aftermarket tomfoolery that most accidents do happen.
3. Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter
There is a third heavy duty log splitter that we actually considered for the number one spot on our list, and it is the Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter. It has a 3HP engine, whereas everything else we have been looking at has 2HP motors, but it is still only able to develop 7 tones of pressure. Where that extra pony comes into play is in the increased speed with which the Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter manages to handle the logs. Still, they too have that 2 hand feature that we feel is more dangerous than helpful and that is why this is not our number one choice.
4. Pow’ R’ Kraft 65556 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter
Depending on where you get your logs from and what their quality is, you may be able to spend very little and get the much less powerful Pow’ R’ Kraft 65556 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter. At 4 tones of pressure this machine is still strong enough to go through any type of wood, no matter how hard, but it will struggle with logs that have knots in them or that are not perfectly cut. So if you buy your logs from a professional wood mill, or from one of the major retailers, you do not need to worry about difficult logs, and you can afford to take the chance and buy the Pow’ R’ Kraft 65556 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter.
5. Pow’ R’ Kraft 65575 7-Ton 2-Speed Electric Log Splitter
The same guys that created the 4 ton log splitter also created a 7 ton version that has one, very interesting feature. The Pow’ R’ Kraft 65575 7-Ton 2-Speed Electric Log Splitter has a 2 speed system that allows you to increase power when dealing with difficult logs. This feature is particularly useful because it allows you to save on your electrical bill, while still keeping in reserve the type of power that you would need to split logs that are filled with knots. Still there are 2 disadvantages that have forced us to keep the Pow’ R’ Kraft 65575 7-Ton 15 amp 2-Speed Electric Log Splitter as our last option: on the one hand it is the heaviest log splitter on our list, and on the other it forces you to use 2 hands to operate the machine.
