Best Rotary Tool

There are so many jobs that a rotary tool can do that are just impossible or incredibly difficult with any other type of tool, that it is almost impossible for us to identify the exact type of job that you would want to buy something like this for. Needless to say that it is the perfect tool for attaching things to drywall, where a regular drill might be too strong and just punch through, and it is also perfect for cleaning small metal and wood objects around the house. Anything from a trombone’s pipes to your kitchen sink could benefit from a rotary tool, so, instead of focusing on the different types of tools you can find on the market today, we decided to focus on the very best tools on the market at different price points and let you decide which tool you need. We have focused on the reliability of the tool and the intensity of the jobs it can take in the in depth reviews we have prepared for each tool, so make sure to scroll down past the following list if you want to check those out and make an informed decision before you buy.

1. Black & Decker RTX-B 3-Speed RTX Rotary Tool Kit

It almost seems superfluous to say anything except that our number one choice is a Black & Decker, the RTX-B 3-Speed RTX Rotary Tool Kit. Still, there are a couple of things that we need to draw your attention to, not the least of which being the fact that this tool comes with just 5 accessories, whereas to get the most out of a rotary tool you need an upwards of 20 if not 40 accessories. So we have kept the designation Kit in the title, because Black & Decker themselves are marketing it as such, but we strongly encourage you to also get an accessories tool box. On the other hand, though, the fact that the Black & Decker RTX-B 3-Speed RTX Rotary Tool Kit does not have that many tools right out of the box means you can buy just the few accessories you need for your particular job and you can buy the very best, using the same money you would spend on a complete kit. This is a particularly good strategy since the Black & Decker rotary tool is the most powerful one you could get and therefore it will apply a lot of pressure on the different heads that you attach to it and they need to be of the very best quality.

2. Kawasaki 840589 190-Piece Rotary Tool and Accessory Kit

After all that complaining we had about the lack of accessories that come with the Black & Decker, it should come as no surprise that our second favorite choice is the Kawasaki 840589 190-Piece Rotary Tool and Accessory Kit. And yes, the creators of the famous Kawasaki motorcycles are the ones behind this impressive tool kit. The rotary tool itself is very powerful and very well put together. The drill heads and all the other accessories are of the very best quality, so you may want to buy just the accessories from Kawasaki. Then again, for almost the same price you would pay for the Black & Decker you can get the accessories and the Kawasaki rotary tool, so, unless you are working often in very hard materials like graphite and steal, then the Kawasaki 840589 190-Piece Rotary Tool and Accessory Kit really is the best purchase you could make.

3. WEN 2307 Variable Speed Rotary Tool Kit with 100-Piece Accessories

Staying for just a moment with the idea of a complete rotary tool kit, we have the WEN 2307 Variable Speed Rotary Tool Kit with 100-Piece Accessories. It is a much less expensive alternative to the Kawasaki offer we have just talked about, but the quality of their products is just as high as you would expect from a product that deserves to be called “the best”. The great thing about WEN is that they perfectly matched their tool with its accessories, so the tool will not exceed the tolerance levels of the heads it is using. That does translate into a tool that does not handle extensive drilling in extra hard materials, but it is absolutely brilliant with wood, drywall, even steal on occasion.

4. SE PT9.6 Cordless Variable Speed Rotary Tool

Coming down another level of magnitude we have the absolute cheapest rotary tool that we still thought deserved your and our attention. The SE PT9.6 Cordless Variable Speed Rotary Tool comes with just 3 sanding sleeves and that tends to tell you all you need about it. This is not a drilling tool, although with the appropriate accessories it can do that too, but ideally you should only buy this if you already have the required heads and are planning to work mostly with wood. The SE PT9.6 Cordless Variable Speed Rotary Tool itself will not get damaged unless you push it too hard, but it will easily overheat if you try to tackle some of the more labor intensive jobs you would expect to pool off with a rotary tool.

5. DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp Rotary Tool

The final choice for our list of the best rotary tools on the market is the DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out. It is the most expensive tool on our list, but it is also the most powerful. To give you an idea of what that means consider the fact that all the tools except for the Black & Decker are rated at 1 Amps, the B & D had 2 Amps, so it is twice as powerful as anything else, but the DeWalt has 5 Amps. Unfortunately it too does not come with its own accessories, so you will need to buy those separately, further adding to the total cost, and you will have to buy some pretty strong, and therefore expensive accessories, given the power of the tool. So while we do love the DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp Rotary Tool and it really is the very best you could buy, we cannot imagine what type of jobs would warrant the extra money you would have to spend for it.
